Abstract:
This research talk will present a programme spanning fundamental discovery to clinical translation, with the goal of improving musculoskeletal health. Player has pioneered tissue engineered skeletal muscle models that recreate key aspects of tissue structure and function, enabling investigation of disease and injury mechanisms and evaluation of emerging therapies. These insights support regenerative strategies, including advanced tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting for volumetric muscle loss. The Player laboratory is also developing EMG, AI-enabled and NIRS technologies to measure muscle function, monitor recovery and support personalised rehabilitation. Together, these approaches integrate biological discovery, engineering innovation and clinical need, accelerating the development of new solutions for the prevention, treatment, repair and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disease and injury.
Biography:
Dr Darren J. Player is an Associate Professor in Musculoskeletal Bioengineering at UCL. His interdisciplinary research brings together cell and molecular biology, tissue engineering, biomaterials and bioengineering to understand the mechanisms of disease and injury and translate these insights into innovative strategies for tissue repair, regeneration and rehabilitation. In 2024-2025 he was awarded a highly prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering / Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship, to develop 3D-bioprinting technologies for volumetric muscle loss.
